- We surrendered our first goal on a low driven corner kick. First of all, we should be fronting our men. By this, I mean we should be playing ball side and goal side of our mark. If this was happening, this player would not have been so wide open. Secondly, a man should always be fronting the kick, therefore not allowing a driven ball to enter the area at the near post. Two mistakes cost us their first shot on goal, which cost us to concede our first goal.
- We surrendered our second goal on another free kick. We need to organize and communicate who is marking who on these set pieces. By simply calling out what number you are marking and who is left unmarked, we can eliminate surrendering these kinds of goals. Following the ball until it is grabbed by the goalkeeper or leaves the playing area is also a must.
- How many times did we turn the ball over to the opposing team by bad throw-ins? We need to all know what the rules are for throwing the ball into play. If someone does not understand what they are doing wrong, please ask! We cannot afford to give the ball to the other team because we make a foul throw.
- We used the transition part of the game very well, especially near the end of the game. However, sometimes in transition we were moving the ball too slowly. We need to attack quicker in transition and take advantage of numbers up situations.
- We need to work on our thru balls. How many times did we play a thru ball that went straight to the goalkeeper? In these instances, the ball must either be played into a corner of the field, outside of the goalkeepers box, or played with less pace so that it does not carry through to the goalkeeper. Playing the ball at an angle, diagonally between the defenders will also help rectify this situation. We had several good thoughts of thru balls, but poor execution cost us a few chances.
- Our spacing needs some work. We need to have less of a gap between our defenders and midfielders and also between our midfielders and forwards. This will allow us to possess the ball better and attack more efficiently.
- Lastly, we need to switch the field more often. Many times the outside midfielders were open on the far side of the field, but we attempted to force feed the ball down the same side of the field that we were on. If we can either play a long ball switch or a switch of the field by a couple shorter passes, we can be more effective in breaking down their defense.
